The McPhillips Community Fund 2026
The McPhillips Community Fund 2026 is committed to improving the well being of men across Shropshire by providing targeted support for their mental health. A flow-through grant of £20,000 is to be distributed to voluntary and community organisations working to address mental health challenges faced by men aged 25 and over.
This grant scheme is designed to support innovative projects, services, and initiatives that empower men to improve their mental health, reduce social isolation, and promote long-term well-being.
Funding Period: Projects must be completed within 12 months of receiving the grant.
Need
The need in Shropshire, Telford, and Wrekin is substantial, driven by higher suicide rates in males, specific occupational risks, and increased demand for mental health services across the region. Men aged 55-64 are identified as being at the highest risk of suicide in the region, followed closely by those aged 35-54.
Specific occupations common in the region, such as agriculture/farming and construction, are associated with higher suicide risk. Additionally, wider issues, (including debt, in-work poverty, the cost-of-living crisis and living alone) have been highlighted as major contributors to poor mental health in local men.
Project Focus
Projects should aim to improve the mental health and wellbeing of men through one or more of the following:
- Counselling and therapeutic support.
- Peer support groups.
- Workshops and training focused on coping strategies.
- Physical activity initiatives designed to enhance mental and emotional well-being.
- Employment and skills development programs that boost confidence and reduce social isolation.
Applications will be assessed on the following criteria:
- Relevance to the mental health needs of men aged 25+ across Shropshire.
- Innovation and sustainability of the project.
- Reach and impact of the initiative.
- Value for money and feasibility of the project within the funding period.
Reporting and Evaluation:
Successful applicants will be required to submit a progress report after six months of project delivery and provide a final report at the end of the funding period, detailing project outcomes, participant feedback, and the impact on beneficiaries’ mental health.
This grant scheme provides a significant opportunity to support men across Shropshire struggling with mental health issues. We encourage organisations with relevant expertise to apply and contribute to improving the well-being and integration of men in the community.
