More Than Grant-Making: The Wider Role of Shropshire Community Foundation
When people hear the name Shropshire Community Foundation, grants are often the first thing that come to mind.
Grant-making is an important part of what we do, but it is only one part of a much wider role.
Shropshire Community Foundation is an independent, accredited charitable foundation working across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin to bring together donors, businesses, charities, voluntary groups and community organisations, helping local generosity have the greatest possible impact.
Our work is about responding to the needs of communities today, while also helping to build a stronger and more sustainable voluntary and community sector for the future.
Connecting local giving with local need
Across Shropshire, there are individuals, families, businesses and organisations that want to make a positive difference, but knowing how to give for the greatest impact is not always straightforward.
At the same time, charities, voluntary organisations and grassroots groups are working directly with communities and responding to a wide range of local challenges.
Our role is to help bring those two sides together.
Through our local knowledge, relationships and grant-making experience, we administer grant programmes, help people establish charitable endowment funds and work to ensure support reaches organisations that are well placed to make a difference.
For smaller, locally rooted organisations in particular, even a relatively modest grant can have a significant impact, helping them launch a new project, continue an existing service and reach more people .
By maintaining relationships with organisations across the county, we can better understand emerging needs, share opportunities, create useful connections and help local groups access wider support.
Creating opportunities beyond funding
Many of the challenges facing communities cannot be addressed by one organisation working alone.
That is why partnership and collaboration are such an important part of our work.
We work with businesses, individuals, charitable trusts, community organisations and other partners to bring together funding, knowledge, relationships and opportunities. These collaborations can open up opportunities beyond traditional funding.
A recent example came through Zac’s Fund, an endowment fund which Shropshire Community Foundation have administered for several years to support children affected by a cancer diagnosis and their families in our county.
In late 2025, 16-year-old Issy had recently been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and was facing Christmas in hospital, followed by a long course of chemotherapy. Her treatment meant delaying her GCSEs and placed her ambition of becoming a Formula One engineer on hold.
Alongside financial support through Zac’s Fund, SCF Grant Ambassador and Trustee Graham Wynn was able to draw on his connections within Formula One to create a wonderful opportunity for Issy and her F1 Ambition.
After responding well to treatment and completing chemotherapy in March, Issy and her family were invited to visit the BWT Alpine Formula One Team in Oxfordshire in August. They were given a full tour of the factory and the chance to see the engineers at work.
Her father, James, said: “Issy really enjoyed it and was even able to hold the steering wheel that was used in the race last week, as the engineers were working on this at the time of our visit.”
The experience has helped reignite Issy’s ambition to work in Formula One, with the possibility of work experience with the BWT Alpine Formula One Team next year also discussed during the visit.
For Issy and her family, it was an opportunity to look beyond an incredibly difficult period and towards the future again. It also shows how the Foundation’s relationships and connections can create opportunities that sit alongside financial support.
Helping people give locally
For donors and partners, working with Shropshire Community Foundation provides a trusted and informed way to give locally.
We understand the county, maintain relationships with organisations working within its communities and have experience administering charitable funds and grant programmes.
This means donors do not have to identify individual organisations or manage the entire grant-making process themselves. We can help them understand where needs exist and develop an approach that reflects what they want their giving to achieve.
That could mean contributing to an existing fund, creating a named fund, supporting a particular area or cause, establishing a business giving programme or creating something that will support Shropshire for the longer term.
SCF are developing philanthropy across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, encouraging more people to consider how their giving could support the county, whether through a one-off donation, regular support, a business partnership, a family fund or a gift left in a will.
Building for Shropshire’s future
Alongside responding to immediate needs, Shropshire Community Foundation has an important long-term role to build and sustain more endowment funding.
Unlike funding that is awarded and spent immediately (grants), an endowment fund is invested, with the income generated used to support communities over time. This means a donation made today can continue benefiting charities and voluntary organisations for generations to come.
Growing Shropshire’s endowment creates a lasting charitable resource for the county, helping ensure there is funding available to respond to needs that may look very different in ten, twenty or fifty years’ time.
Funds such as Zac’s Fund show how that long-term approach can translate into very personal, immediate support when it is needed most.
By bringing together local knowledge, funding, relationships and long-term thinking, we can help generosity across the county reach the people, organisations and communities where it can make the greatest difference, both now and in the future.
